PovidoneIodine is a complex of iodine with
polyvinyl pyrrolidone that is highly effective
against agents causing disease in man, lower
animals, and plants, it retains the rapid, broad
spectrum action of elemental iodine against
bacteria, viruses, funghi, spores, protozoa, and
yeasts. It has also been shown to be effective
in the control of some insects, helminthes, and nematodes.
On the other hand, Povidone is safer and easier
to use than classical preparations of the halogen.
This organic iodine complex has a low systemic toxicity
and is essentially nonirritating to mammalian tissue.
It is nonsensitizing and does not cause severe pain when
applied to wounds or mucous membranes.
Moreover, PovidoneIodine
forms films that protect open wounds but are waterwashable and
will not permanently stain skin, natural fibers, or hard surfaces.
It is exceptionally easy to formulate because it is soluble in
water as well as in organic solvents, such as alcohols. It is
equally adaptable for use in powder, solution, lotion, cream,
or spray vehicles. |

| Physcial and Chemical Properties |
 |
|
PovidoneIodine is a stable chemical complex of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (pvp)
and elemental iodine. It contains not less than 9.0 percent and not more than
12.0 percent of available iodine. It is soluble in water and in alcohol;
Practically insoluble in chloroform, in carbon tetrachloride, in ether, in solvent
hexane, an in acetone. |

| Incompatibility |
 |
1. pH: Systems incorporating, PovidoneIodine should be on the side to prevent
dissociation of diatomic iodine. Alkaline solutions, including ammonia, and
reducing agents lower the antiseptic action.
2. Plastic, wood, or stainless steel may be used for measuring PovidoneIodine. It should be noted that aqueous solutions
containing 2% available iodine will corrode silver within two hours, while stainless steel is unaffected. |
